Sainsbury’s declines £1m compensation

Vicky Beckett 21/09/2011

Sainsburys’ captive chose not to claim compensation for damages caused by the UK riots.

The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, extended the period in which companies could claim for the British police compensation scheme under the 1886 UK Riot Act.

The British supermarket could have claimed up to £1m in damages to property and loss of stock.

Many captive owners argued companies have responsibilities to their stakeholders to claim.

Justin King, Sainsbury’s CEO, said: “Like many other businesses, we could have claimed against the police under the Riot (Damages) Act. But we think it would be far better for the police to focus on the claims made by small local businesses, and settle them swiftly and in full.

“It’s wrong to divert resources away from front-line policing at a time when our communities need the police to put their energy into rebuilding and restoring confidence in our high streets.”

Cell Company Guide

WELCOME TO THE Captive Review Cell Company Handbook 2009 – the second edition of our global directory of cell company jurisdictions. Since we last published this directory, the general attitude toward cell companies seems to have shifted up a gear. Whereas single-parent companies have long ruled the captive roost, a slight uptick in the formation of pure captives at the beginning of this year can’t hide the fact that growth in this market is still sluggish.
