Bermuda benefits from Captive Live clients

Vicky Beckett 03/10/2011

Bermuda believes the world still needs to be educated on the benefits of the domicile after sending regulators and a full range of service providers to the Captive Live USA conference, Chicago.

Business Bermuda, JLT and the Bermudan Monetary Authority reported getting many new potential clients from Canada at the conference after Canada and Bermuda recently signed a tax information exchange agreement (TIEA).

Janita Burke, partner at Appleby Bermuda, said: “Attendees from Europe, the US and Canada made inquiries about Bermuda as their choice of domicile, and a few were in the process of conducting feasibility studies.

“From the questions asked, it is clear that Bermuda as a market needs to continue to educate the world at large about Bermuda and its insurance and general international business offering.”

Peter Willits, president of Liberty Mutual and vice-president of Bermuda Insurance Management Association, said: “Several of the panel discussions have been very informative, and I am looking forward to pulling down the presentations and developing some business opportunities based on them.”

Beverly Todd, executive vice-president of JLT insurance management, said: “This conference was well attended for the first time out for Captive Review in the US, and the sessions were informative.

“I think having the Business Bermuda (pictured)and JLT booths help bring business into Bermuda and that the conference will be bigger and more beneficial to keep coming as the captive industry is mostly compromised of US parent companies.”

Todd, Burke, Jason Carne, insurance partner at KPMG Bermuda and Shelby Weldon, director of insurance at the Bermudan Monetary Authority sat on a panel discussing ‘Bermuda and Canada: the Growing relationship.’

Cell Company Guide

WELCOME TO THE Captive Review Cell Company Handbook 2009 – the second edition of our global directory of cell company jurisdictions. Since we last published this directory, the general attitude toward cell companies seems to have shifted up a gear. Whereas single-parent companies have long ruled the captive roost, a slight uptick in the formation of pure captives at the beginning of this year can’t hide the fact that growth in this market is still sluggish.
