NAIC appoints 2012 president

New officers were elected by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) on Friday November 4.
 
Kevin McCarty, Florida insurance commissioner, was named the new president effective from January 1, 2012.
 
Until this point he will serve as NAIC president-elect, it was confirmed at the NAIC’s fall national meeting.
 
James Donelan, Louisiana insurance commissioner was voted the 2012 president-elect, Adam Hamm, North Dakota insurance commissioner will be vice-president and Monica Lindeen, Montana commissioner of securities and insurance was appointed secretary-treasurer.
 
The announcement was made by Susan Voss, Iowa commissioner, the outgoing NAIC president.
 
McCarty (pictured) said: "It is an honour and privilege to be elevated by my colleagues and to this leadership role.
 
"Over the next year we must confront several important challenges. Whether it is Dodd-Frank or the Affordable Care Act, the federal government has become increasingly involved in the insurance arena.
 
“As your president, I intend to vigorously defend the role of state-based regulation, highlight our accomplishments, and continue to work for regulatory modernisation and national uniformity to create an insurance framework that benefits both consumers and the insurance industry."
 
McCarty became Florida's first insurance commissioner in January 2003.
 
He began his career in public service in 1988, focusing on workers' compensation issues with the Florida Department of Labor and Employment Security.
 
12 new zone officers were also appointed.
