Microsoft captive authorised to fund benefit risks

Vicky Beckett 20/12/2011

Microsoft has received provisional authorisation to expand benefit risks using the company’s captive.

The additional coverage, tentatively authorised by the Labor Department will impact about 54,000 US employees, according to its application submitted in October by George O'Donnell, senior vice-president of Aon Hewitt, New Jersey.

In 2009, the Labor Department approved Microsoft's Vermont branch captive to reinsure long-term disability.

Google has applied to fund life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, and long-term disability policies through its Hawaii captive.

Via Christi Health, a Kansas based health care company, has also filed an application to use its Virgin Islands branch of its Cayman-based captive to finance life insurance coverage.

Cell Company Guide

WELCOME TO THE Captive Review Cell Company Handbook 2009 – the second edition of our global directory of cell company jurisdictions. Since we last published this directory, the general attitude toward cell companies seems to have shifted up a gear. Whereas single-parent companies have long ruled the captive roost, a slight uptick in the formation of pure captives at the beginning of this year can’t hide the fact that growth in this market is still sluggish.
