Delaware’s business development director steps down

Vicky Beckett 05/01/2012

The director for business development of Delaware’s department of insurance has stepped down to become Alvarez & Marsal’s risk management advisory group director.

Mary Jo Lopez (pictured) has served the state of Delaware for the past three years, working with the Delaware Captive Insurance Association under Commissioner Stewart.

Lopez said on LinkedIn that she will be working in her new role to: “expand opportunities in the private sector for business owners and senior managers to better understand and explore captive insurance”.

At the end of 2011, the Delaware captive program had grown from 39 licensed captives (year-end 2008) to approximately 150 licensed captives and approximately 120 licensed series business units or protected cells.

Prior to working for the Delaware insurance department Lopez served as the managing partner for Affinitee Group and as a director for Navigant Consulting and RSM McGladrey Consulting.

She has also spent 13 years serving various state insurance commissioners by providing special examination services for insurance companies and business development activities for captive insurance.

“Ms. Lopez’s background makes her a welcome addition to the firm,” said Jim McDermott, managing director and head of Alvarez & Marsal’s insurance industry practice.

“She has had an exceptional career in the insurance business and has led numerous projects, which we believe will be invaluable in supporting our clients and business growth going forward.”

Lopez had been an advisor and speaker for several organisations, including Captive Insurance Companies Association, Healthcare Financial Management Association and Medical Group Management Association.

Cell Company Guide

WELCOME TO THE Captive Review Cell Company Handbook 2009 – the second edition of our global directory of cell company jurisdictions. Since we last published this directory, the general attitude toward cell companies seems to have shifted up a gear. Whereas single-parent companies have long ruled the captive roost, a slight uptick in the formation of pure captives at the beginning of this year can’t hide the fact that growth in this market is still sluggish.
